The Color Doctor is – IN!

Hello Beaderkin! Leah here with another helpful blog from Eureka Crystal Beads! Let’s talk … COLOR!!

In all my years working in a bead store environment and working one-on-one with customers to help them pick out their beads there is one thing that stressed them out over all the rest – COLOR. “Does this look ok??” or “Does this color match with this one??” or “I just don’t know. What should I mix with these beads?!” were just some of the many phrases I heard on a daily basis as I saw our fabulous beaders become more and more concerned with color. I would literally see the beads (pun intended?) of sweat glisten on their brows as they simply lacked some Color-Confidence. It’s impossible to blame them, however. These ladies (and some gentlemen) were selecting beads for projects on which they were possibly going to be spending hours and hours – various intricate pieces sewing beads together one – at – a – time. Wouldn’t you want to make sure you color choice would be outstanding from the get-go, too?

Do YOU suffer from… COLOR FEAR? Read on, because the Color Doctor is IN!

First, let’s talk a little basic COLOR THEORY. To start, we’re going to delve into 3 classifications of colors: PRIMARY colors, SECONDARY colors, and TERTIARY colors.

To the left is a Color Wheel. Highlighted are the 3 Primary Colors: Yellow, Red, and Blue. ALL colors are derived from some sort of combination of these 3 colors.

Here we see the same Color Wheel only the 3 colors highlighted are the Secondary Colors: Orange, Violet, and Green. These colors are created by mixing 2 Primary colors.

Red + Yellow = Orange

Red + Blue = Violet

Blue + Yellow = Green

Lastly, this final Color Wheel shows us our Tertiary Colors. These colors are created by mixing a Primary color with a Secondary color. Example: Red + Orange = Red-Orange, which is showing in the 3 o’clock position on the right side of the wheel.

So here’s the thing with color: If you imagine color to be PAINT, some colors you can mix together to create wonderful new colors, hues, and tones, and other colors, when mixed, will become muddy and grey/brown (which is fine if that’s what you’re going for!). But it’s a matter of knowing what to mix to get which result. Colors OPPOSITE each other on the color wheel (pictured to the left, called COMPLEMENTARY Colors) will become muddy if mixed, BUT side-by-side they will ENHANCE each other, almost vibrate with intensity!! Thankfully, beads aren’t paint. BUT, if you’re using lots and lots of teeny tiny beads (like weaving Delicas with Peyote Stitch) they might as well be as they will tend to blend in together visually so utilizing them takes a little more care. One of the most popular examples of Complementary Colors are RED & GREEN, which may make you think of Christmas! Complementary colors like Yellow & Violet or Blue & Orange may remind you of certain sports teams.

As you pick your beads for a project, think about what sort of feel you want the final piece to have. Do you want it to look a little funky? With some fun pop(s) of color? (e.g. Reds, purples, with hints of Green-yellows!) Or are you looking for something more subtle and demure that remains within a similar color family? (e.g. Blues mixed with Blue-Greens) For many people, the former is the more difficult one. They want to add a little “pop” but it – can – be – scary! Keep a color wheel handy and you simply have to look to the opposite side of the color wheel to determine which color(s) will add the most bang for your buck – the most POP!

“The Milkmaid” by Vermeer is a great example of complementary colors in use! Can you see how the golden yellow of the top of her dress pops nicely next to the deep violet indigo of her skirt?

Here we see a great example of colors in this photograph an ocean wave that stays within the same color family. Varying tones of blues, aquas, teals, mixed with whites all look amazing together – even without a pop of the Red-Orange that would be it’s complementary color scheme!

Now, let’s take a look at what happens when we add some of that Red-Orange! WOW – it really pops out brilliantly against all of those waves!! While this may not be a specific color scheme you want in your next bracelet, the intensity factor here cannot be argued.

Part 3: Czech Glass!

Next time you peruse your beads, think about the specific beads in your collection that truly stand out to you…the ones that make you just a little extra happy when you look at them. What about those beads makes you love them just a little bit more? I’m willing to bet it’s not so much the bead – but the FINISH! The same simple bead can be utterly transformed with various finishes currently available on the market. Today, in part 3 of our new blog mini-series, we’ll review Czech glass beads and just SOME of the amazing finishes that can be found coating them!

Here at Eureka Crystal Beads, we carry a huge selection of Czech glass! On our website we offer a variety of shapes and sizes in various colors that feature these lovely finishes. Below, in our third and final installment in this mini-series, I’ll review the many standard finishes you can expect to find on these lovely beads! Note: Often, more than one finish can be combined on the same bead!

AB ,

AB stands for Aurora Borealis, and whether a seed bead finish is “AB,” “Rainbow,” or “Iris,” they all have one aspect in common: an oil-slick rainbow effect that tends to pick up on whatever else it’s near and can become more or less intense depending on the color underneath it. This will usually cover one part of the bead.

Bronze These beads are coated with a bronze-gold glaze and baked.

Iris Metal Rainbow-type coating, usually found mainly on opaque beads

Slightly less than a matter surface, a frosted finish may resemble sea glass!

Opal If the glass is an Opal glass, it is generally milky and translucent. If it’s the finish that is Opal, the finish will give a bead a milky/pearly effect.

Opaque An opaque glass bead is one that is solid color throughout and that doesn’t let light pass through.

Luster This finish, which is a transparent glaze, provides a white shine to the outside of the bead.

Marea A gold/orange effect over part of a bead

Matte Matte surface beads lack any shiny surface. (When combined with an AB-type finish, they truly take on a beautiful depth!)

Metallic Coated in a metal-type finish that creates a highly reflective bead surface

Peacock A rainbow metallic finish, often with a blue/green tint

Pearl Opaque Luster coating giving the look of an actual pearl when applied over glass.

Satin – Soft dull or flat sheen A soft and hazy luminescent finish

Transparent A clear bead with or without color that allows all light to pass though.

Vitrail Silver/Iridescent finish on part of a bead, often with a bright orange/pink tint

New Swarovski Shapes for 2018:

Swarovski Crystal Color Matching with Pantone Fashion Color Trends for Fall/Winter 2016

The Fall 2016 Pantone color palette is led by the blue family which evokes the desire for tranquility, strength and optimism. The palette is further anchored by earth tones and punctuated with exhilarating pops of color to create a balanced and playful collection.

“Blue skies represent constancy as they are always above us. Grays give a feeling of stability, Red tones invite confidence and warmth, while the hot Pinkish Purples and Spicy Mustard Yellows suggest a touch of the exotic.” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Following the lead of the world’s leading color experts, we’ve put together a guide for how to match the latest Swarovski crystal colors with Pantone’s Fall 2016 color forecast below:

Highlighting the importance of blue in the palette, the new blue shade of PANTONE Riverside undeniably takes precedence in the fall collections.

  • Cool and calming, strong and stable
  • Maintains a sense of constancy
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Denim Blue

blue_Riversidedenim blue

There’s an edge to PANTONE Sharkskin, and yet it manages to remain neutral.

  • Pair-able with almost any fall color, bright or muted
  • A color that the rest of the palette can literally and theoretically rest on
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Black Diamond

In contrast to the stable backbone of the Fall 2016 palette, Aurora Red adds a welcome punch.

  • A bold Red that is warm, sensual and immediately pleasing to the eye
  • Best Swarovski Crystal matches: Light Siam & Swarovski Crystal Dark Red Coral

Warm Taupe is a hearty, pleasing and approachable neutral that pairs well with each of the top 10 shades of the Fall 2016 season.

Like Airy Blue, Pantone’s Dusty Cedar gives a nod to the Color of the Year 2016, Rose Quartz.

  • A fall and winter version of the Pinks we’re used to seeing in spring
  • Dustier rose-toned Pink shade with some complexity
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Blush Rose

Pantone’s green tone for the fall of 2016 is Lush Meadow which brings to mind fresh botanicals and foliage.

  • Rich and elegant, vibrant and sophisticated
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Emerald

Bouncing elegantly off other colors in the palette, Spicy Mustard is an exotic addition of zesty brightness.

  • Adds another splash of uplifting vibrancy
  • A spicier, zestier Yellow than previous seasons
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Sunflower

PANTONE 18-1340 Potter’s Clay has an added degree of sophistication and layering.

  • Neutral earth tone; expected for fall and winter palette
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Topaz

The unexpected bright tone of Bodacious speaks to the gender fluidity we continue to see and adds a brightness to winter styles.

  • Unexpected in fall
  • Versatile; can be used with Pinks and Reds
  • Best Swarovski Crystal match: Rose

Use this guide to matching Swarovski crystal colors to the latest fashion color trends as forecasted by Pantone to keep your designs on trend. It’s also a useful guide to break out from the usual and explore unexpected color combinations that will be gaining popularity in the next few months.

Crystal – Diamond a birthstone color for April.

The diamond or clear crystal is the birthstone for those born April .  April’s birthstone is remarkably simple in composition, yet stunning in its unique ability to reflect and refract light into vivid flashes of brilliant colors. The ancient Hindus called the Diamond “Vajra,” meaning lightening, both because of the sparks of light thrown off by this gem as well as its invincible strength. Clear crystal, or diamond is thought to guarantee the wearer better relationships and an increase in inner strength.

A gift of a Diamond is symbolic of everlasting love. There is no more convincing a promise of an enduring relationship than the brilliant gemstone that has endured in people’s hearts throughout the ages.

Swarovski crystals are specially created to look like real diamonds. They are very bright, maximize light refraction and are also available in coatings such as Aurora Borealis (AB) which gives the surface a rainbow oil slick appearance, coming close to resembling the brilliance and shine of natural diamonds for a fraction of the price. Please check our selection of finishes on Swarovski crystal and choose one which goes with your design’s main color. You can shop Swarovski crystal by coating at

See below crystal chaton, crystal luminous green chaton, crystal silver night chaton and crystal ab chaton.

We have many more Swarovski and after market finishes on our website.
